Duty & Taxes on International Courier & Cargo
Imported goods may be subject to customs duty, taxes and clearance formalities at the destination. Understand how duties and taxes apply to your shipment.
Who pays duties and taxes?
Import duties and taxes are normally payable by the receiver at the destination unless the shipping terms specify otherwise. The amount depends on the declared value, description of goods, destination country and applicable tax rules such as import VAT or GST.
Customs duty
A levy on imported goods based on classification and value.
Import VAT / GST
Consumption tax charged by the destination country on imports above thresholds.
Clearance fees
Brokerage or handling charges for customs processing.
Area surcharges
Additional delivery charges for remote destinations.
How to reduce surprises
- • Declare an accurate value on the invoice.
- • Describe goods clearly so they are classified correctly.
- • Confirm destination thresholds and whether the receiver or sender is responsible.
- • Ask the team before dispatch if duties are expected on your shipment.
